Walking Off the Democrat Plantation – The Providence of Change (part 1 of 3)

Written By: Providence Crowder

Ok, here’s the story.  I was born and raised a Democrat.  As odd as “being born a Democrat” may sound, that statement is as true as it is tragic.  Both of my parents were, my aunts and uncles were, and every influential adult in my life proclaimed to be . . . a Democrat.  I hadn’t considered questioning why because politics didn’t interest me much.  I inherently knew that I was one, and when I became of voting age, the fundamental rule was that I must vote the party line all the way down the voting ticket.  Why Democrat, you may ask?  Because all black people, as far as I was told, voted Democrat.  And since I was black, that made me Democrat.  So when I turned 18 years of age, I registered to vote and voted as any good black American would. I followed the example of those around me and saddled that Democrat donkey every election Tuesday without understanding the issues, without learning the party platforms, and without a thorough assessment of the candidates.  Heck, I didn’t even care to know such things; I just wanted the Democrats to win the election against those “racist” Republicans that I had been taught were against black people.  I wanted the rich to pay their fair share like we, the poor and working class Americans, were.  I didn’t even mind a little redistribution of wealth when it came to someone else’s fortune, as long as mine was left alone.

MY CHRISTIAN ROOTS

Moreover, my Christian roots ran deeper than my Democratic ones.  I was raised in a strongly conservative Christian home, and even though for a time I had strayed, I eventually grew to know and love Christ on my own as an adult.  Christianity became no longer my parent’s religion, but MY faith, MY conviction, MY choice.  I eventually began to seek godliness in all areas of my life; work, home, recreation . . . in everything.  My Christian worldview even caused me to, for the first time, examine my politics.

Upon a closer examination of my party, I learned that most of the Democratic Party’s platform stood against many biblical moral standards.  Generally, they rejected the biblical definition of marriage and they overwhelmingly supported abortion.  I learned that more often than not, when I voted for a Democratic candidate, I was voting against my family values.   That troubled me greatly and I began to question my loyalty to the party; and after I began to make my way through college and learn a little about economics, I discovered that the Democratic Party’s economic policies were detrimental for not only black Americans, but for all Americans!

Their socialist policies have managed to create a permanent underclass of poor blacks dependent on government programs and entitlements for survival.  Their policies have done what 400 years of slavery couldn’t do; destroy the black family.  The government has replaced the father in many poor black households by promising young mothers that they would provide for her and her children and pay her bills, as long as the father was not in the home.  Their policies have discouraged work by providing greater benefits and incentives for staying home.  Their policies have supported the genocide of black babies through the public funding of “murder on demand” corporations such as Planned Parenthood.  Their policies have turned affirmative action into an unfair quota system that discriminates against white men and at the same time puts into question the qualifications and merit of accomplished blacks.  After learning all this, I remembered on several occasions telling my husband, “You know I’m a Republican on paper.  I like the party but not the people.  They are spot on point and I agree with most of what they’re saying, but I will not vote for any of those racists.”

I was almost free, but the great escape didn’t come without challenge.  After all that I had learned, I still wanted a reason to vote Democrat because I subconsciously feared going against my cultural norm. I had just the reason.  Republicans were racist and did NOT want me to be a part of their party!  Though I had seen those black Republican weirdo sell-outs on TV (through sound bites played on MSNBC), it wasn’t until my first personal encounter with a black Republican, a friend and co-worker, that I would finally break the Democratic stronghold, break free from the groupthink politics that have left blacks politically inept; escape the mental slavery that the modern day plantation of “entitlements” and “government help” have used to entice many into laziness, dependency, and unproductivity.  Rachel Maddow and Keith Olbermann were starting to lose their grip on me.

HELP FROM A FRIEND

My dear conservative friend introduced me to some historical facts about the Democratic Party that helped push me to research for myself whether or not the claims he made were true.  What I learned crushed my beliefs that the Republican Party was full of racists who were trying to hold the black man down.  What I learned left me with no affinity for my inherited party; I was left, finally, with NO good reason to vote Democrat.

What I found out in my quest for political clarity was that the Republican party passed EVERY civil rights legislation in regard to black Americans, including the 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act, which was signed by a Democrat president but only passed because of a Republican congress’ overwhelming support.  Most Democrats in congress opposed it.  Republicans passed the 13th amendment, freeing black slaves; the 14th amendment, giving blacks their citizenship; the 15th amendment, granting blacks the right to vote.  Even still, whenever Democrats would take back control of the white house and congress, they would prevent blacks from buying land, they denied them fair wages for their work, and they undid many of the civil rights advancements of the Republicans.

Republicans were largely responsible for promoting and defending the civil rights of blacks while Democrats fought to lynch us, enslave us, and keep us as second-class citizens.  I discovered that even civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was Republican and so was abolitionist Frederick Douglass.  Other abolitionists, both black and white, were Republican.  In fact, I learned that the Republican Party (initially comprised of disgruntled Democrats, Whigs, and Free Soil party members) was established in 1854 as the anti-slavery party; they opposed the spreading of slavery into free states.

I had always been told that white people were the ones who upheld slavery and fought to keep black people down.  I had never heard the political aspect of the civil rights controversy.  White people who identified themselves as Republican (most also identified themselves as Protestant Christians or Evangelicals) fought to free black slaves.  They clearly identified their enemy as Democrat, or Southern Democrat, the ones who wanted to maintain and spread slavery.  John Mark Reynolds once said of the Republican Party, “When it came time to confront the original sin of the nation—slavery—the Republican Party was on the Lord’s side.” Once they were granted the right to vote, blacks voted Republican and worked alongside white Republicans to advance our freedom in this country.

Editor’s Note: Part 2, starting with “THE DEMOCRAT PARTY’S SHAMEFUL PAST” will be published tomorrow. Don’t miss it!

  1. WOOT WOOT! Stacy, this was just the tip of the iceberg, I can’t wait to read tomorrow!!! Well done and I am so proud to call you my friend! God bless you.

  2. It was MLK’s father, a Republican who when hearing of his sons arrest, which was greatly upsetting a very pregnant daughter-in-law he called President Kennedy and asked that the President call MLK’s wife and offer his support of Dr MLK. If the President would do this then MLK’s father would come out in support of the Democrats and bring all his Republican voting friends over to the Democrat table. The President did make the phone call but in a twist of lies he did not support MLK but only offered Mrs King his sympathies…. Thinking the President had done as requested the father did do as he had promised which fast became the reason that blacks be came Democrat voters… They switched parties on a lie……….and because of a phony phone call.

  3. Maria Lima says:

Awesome story!! As a ‘hispanic’, I know just a little about growing up with certain things just naturally expected of you, and the inherent difficuties of breaking those molds! Thank you for pointing out the imperative NEED our nation has of each of us breaking free of the expectations thrust upon us by our cultures…and being FREE INDEED! (JOHN 8:36) Blessings!

  4. Mike O says:

Sadly, African-Americans were not the first to receive this treatment of destroying culture, then breeding dependency for control, The Native-Americans received this treatment first.

    • Sandy says:

Mike O you are so correct. My ancestors from my mothers side were Native Americans and suffered much from the “white” man. No one is doing the blacks a favor by handing out freebies and encouraging them to rely solely on hand outs. It goes on generation after generation and keeps the blacks at the mercy of the powerful. What a wonderful thing to see the blacks who have pulled themselves from that trap.

  5. PeterGunn says:

A compelling story, indeed. I’m wondering how we can get this message out to many more people? It’s vital that as many as possible hear this call for clarity on this long-misunderstood question: Why do so many black people vote the Democrat ticket when it was the Republican voter, long ago up to current times, who sided with the best interests of not only the black community, but all people?

  6. RIGHT in the middle says:

Very well written! Great perspective! I look forward to reading parts 2 and 3.

  7. Tony says:

As a white man who is allso an American my ancesters supported the underground rail road, and never was a hungry person ever turned away from their door. Times were hard on all, and I still remember my grand father teaching me that all men were to be treated with dignity, and respect. As I grew up, and joined the military I found my sel a victem of reverse discrimination and I found out personaly what a foul bitter thing that it was to be discriminated against.

  8. Excellent! This word must be spread across the country!

  9. Tnacgal says:

Great read, awesome story and REAL passion! Thank you for sharing it with all of us!

  10. Dawn says:

this is excellent!! im a white republican blessed with friends of every color, nationality, and religion.i feel we are all one race..the human race.and i live in the united states where people should all stand together and be one strong nation.some points brought out here i knew, but some i didnt.but this is why im a republican. thanks for writing this so beautifully

  11. Janette Channing says:

Hi, I am a white woman originally from NY. When I was young, I never paid attention to politics. About 11 years I started getting interested in the different things I heard. I am a Republican, and found out I was not interested in helping the poor, didn’t want to pay taxes, was rich and disliked blacks. Well, this really shocked me, I had no idea I was evil. I always gave to the poor, paid my taxes and liked everyone. I never thought of color, I thought more of a person’s character. I started listening more to what the Dem. were doing, and I realized how they were forcing people to depend on them, by throwing one crumb at a time. One thing I could never understand is how a black person could vote for a Dem. when the KKK was made of all Dem. Each day I see how the Dem. programs hold people back. I pray that this President has awaken people to what is really going on. They say the Rep. have all the money, how come the Dem have so much money that they can run more political adds? I know, just another lie by the Dem.
May God bless you and your and may He continue to bless the USA, and may He also help people make the right decisions in the next election…

  12. What a great perspective that Providence writes from, Stacy! Thanks for the FB friend request! Keep up the great work!

  13. kenzieworld says:

Excellent job. I can’t wait to read the rest.

  14. This is such an intriguing article. I enjoyed reading your uphill climb and the way you discovered a better way of thinking. Thank you so much for sharing. I look forward to more of your articles.
Education is wonderful isn’t it!? It teaches us we don’t have to blindly follow our parents, teachers, or neighbors but can go out there & discover the life we want for ourselves. I’ll bet none of the elders of your family knew they could do that and have always just followed those who came before them – even if that path led to darkness. It’s a great world when we look into all aspects & make our own choices. I say government is complicit in holding the black people down to this very day. On promises that government will ‘give’ them all they need, they vote for that person, never realizing it takes away their initiative to make their own way……Maybe they’ll read this and give it some real thought….

  15. Duncan Regen says:

As usual this is a great article, and how sweet would it be for the black community to discover these facts. I have wondered this for years. Its good to be able to witness the change that’s comming

  16. Sarah Mullen says:

Interesting article indeed! I always wonder one thing though, and that is, whatever happened to personal responsibility? Do you believe it was abolished by the programs you speak of? It’s funny that you say you were “born Democrat, but came from a Conservative black family” I KNEW what you meant, but Conservatives USUALLY identify with Republicans! And the other thing “funny” about that is that I was born Republican, I knew EXACTLY what you meant from the other side of the fence. Though I find myself now very much more middle of the road. I want people to have a “helping hand” when they need it, to see them through hard times, but to be able to pull themselves up and out of that necessity. The problem is, welfare mentality promotes laziness…it’s so much EASIER to just collect that check every month, let the government pick up the grocery bill… it’s not like they’re living high on the hog, which then develops a poverty mentality, which is self-perpetuating unless something or someone intervenes! You ARE what you think… the law of attraction, so if you are thinking poverty, poverty is what you are getting… and God helps them that help themselves, as the old saying goes :). I am looking forward to the rest, thank you for being so thoughtful to write it.

  17. Jedicounsel says:

This piece was very enlightening, especially the discussion of how hard it is to make a change that goes against your cultural expectations. Thank you for writing it. I have a sincere question though: how can the majority of black Americans not know that Republicans were responsible for the ending of slavery, the post civil war amendments, reconstruction, and the 1964 civil rights act? My mother and my wife are hispanics who became Americans because of the Spanish American War. So I know, and I made sure my son knows, what the Spanish American War was, what the Maine was, and the happy accident of history that caused him to be born in the USA (and at all). It’s like the Jews telling their children at Passover the story of how they passed from slavery in Egypt into freedom, it’s so fundamental to cultural identity. Maybe a better question is how can the schools that taught them have failed in that respect? Maybe a better question is, how is is possible the Republican Party has completely dropped the ball on publicizing what I consider to be the greatest part of its legacy?

  18. Old MS Miller says:

Wake up everyone. We are being controlled by the ultra rich. Their ideas are designed to keep themselves on top of the hill. Currently we the people are becoming too many and too smart for them to control. The ultra rich actually believe that it is their heavenly right to be boss of everyone and they will do many ugly things to rid the earth of those who have challenged their right. They will set up so many smoke screens and use too many underhanded tools to whittle the average population down to where they can control us.

  19. Liz says:

Even though I know everything this author said about Civil Rights and the Republican and Democrat Party, I love hearing Providence’s journey, her words and her perspective.

  20. Brandy says:

Providence, this is one of the most amazing articles I have seen. I’m so glad you see the truth! I just had a discussion yesterday with someone about all these same things. Education is key in our nation and mainly about the correct history, finances, what both parties stand for and what our government is REALLY all about (or should be). I just want to say – welcome to “our side” and that your post here really made my day a great one! This article for many will turn many tables on preconceived notions out there. I will share it gladly 🙂 Hope you have a blessed day!

    • Kerry Redmond says:

My feeling exactly! Wonderful article and it gives me hope that we all can come together and live as one, if we can just educate those who want to learn the truth and erradicate the ones who choose to stifle life!

  21. Judy Crayton Edwardsvill Ks says:

I’m saving your whole article. I’ve heard pieces here and there but not a cohesive history. I’m going to put a couple in my glove compartment of my car just so I’ll be ready if God brings someone along who was needing it.
You’ve written such a good hearted article I hope God spreads if far and wide by people who read this. Thank you so much Ms Crowder. Judy Crayton

  22. Cyndi says:

Thank you for this. You have truly blessed this white girl.

  23. Thank you for having the courage to share your story with us.

  24. pellucere says:

Good stuff! Really good stuff. I can’t wait to read parts 2 and 3.

  25. Kerry Redmond says:

Love, Love, Love this article! I too am a white American (so what!) and have known a lot, not all, of what was written here and am so glad to hear this finally being put on paper for all to see, especially by a black woman! You are a true inspiration Providence and I wish you all the best! God Bless you and yours!!!
    Kerry Redmond

  26. This is a GREAT series! I have already retweeted Part 1 and Part 2, can’t wait for part 3. Maybe, just maybe, it will help more blacks trapped in the lies of the democrats to see the light and escape from the trap. I fear that most will not listen or understand, but maybe we can save a few. Keep up the great work!

PS I am a white, 72 year old Republican and I have ALWAYS been on the side of the black man. He and the Native Americans got a raw deal from our government, back long before I could do anything about it. If we can make people see the lies maybe we can make it better. Republicans have ALWAYS been on the side of the working man and woman, whether black, red or yellow, or any other color.

  27. Thank you all so much for your wonderful words, blessings, and testimonies! I am so humbled by the positive feedback and encouraged by your stories. It’s great to know that I am in the company of fellow Americans who love God and country! May God bless us all , we are in this together.

  28. Anna says:

Not black but my father was raised a coal miner’s son. Life was hard on them – then the unions came, made changes, were democrats. I has similar experiences through my learning curve. The Holy Spirit pressed me with God’s force and I became closer and close to Christ. So wonderful to be set free – and be free indeed. Many Blessings

  29. Jane Wroton says:

God Bless You, Providence Crowder! What an insightful young lady you are… and what an awesome name your parents gave you! I am 61, never gave much thought to politics one way or the other until the 2008 Presidential election, but now, thanks to Our Man Herman Cain and a conscious decision to educate myself, I am now Informed… Engaged… and Inspired! And, thanks to YOU, this “old dog” has learned more than just a few “new tricks” about the party I adopted 3 yrs ago! What misinformation the “lamestream media” is feeding folks… and so many are eating it up, no questions asked… no desire to think for themselves! Thanks, Stacy Swimp, for giving Providence this opportunity and forum to dispel these myths! Keep up the great work, both of you… and keep spreading the word!!!

Wow! I’m usually the one avoiding political stuff, beyond what I need to know to vote, but really enjoyed this article! One of my friends put this link up on facebook. I may have to do the same. I’m a Christian, conservative, mostly Republican, white woman. I wondered for years why so many black Americans are Democrats, but have never been able to pin down an answer. I am enlightened now. Thank you! The devil comes as an angel of light and he’s oh so patient and sly. God bless you! Your sister in Christ, Della

  32. laura says:

This is a wonderful article. However, I was a Republican becuz I am pro-life and Christian. Then, I examined the Republican Party. I learned it was infiltrated by a pack of liars who claim to be Christian and conservatives, but really are global communist members of the CFR seeking to destroy everything about America they say they stand up for. I believe Republican voters are Christian and conservative. But, I believe we’re being lied to and misrepresented. I don’t believe there is a political class that controls both sides of the aisle and neither one represents Christian conservatism. Sorry. My dissent.

  33. The Republican Party in the 19th Century was really the Democratic Party of today. They Parties have evolved around a full circle since the inception of the Party System. George Washington always said that the 2 Party System of Govt would never work.

  34. Great review! You actually covered some curious things in your post. I came across it by using Google and I’ve got to admit that I already subscribed to the site, will be following you on my iphone 🙂

Providence, Love your name as I’m from Providence, RI originally now living in Kansas. I grew up Democrat coming from New England. Most of my family still votes this way even though there are so many indications of the failure of Democratic policies. Education on the issues and being open to other opinions finally turned me into a Republican and I’m proud to be one. I also like the Tea Party principles as they begin to question the economic and financial dilema’s our country is facing. I hope to read your other 2 parts of the article. Certainly enjoyed this one and learned something in the process.

  37. Pat says:

Please pick up and read a book from amazon (it’s very inexpensive) called, “It’s Very Simple:The Truth About Civil RIghts” by Alan Stang. It further documents what the Democrats were really a part of and what they really use Civil Rights causes for.

  38. D. M. Chaney says:

Excellent piece. I will add that, rather than focusing on party platform (and I agree with most of what has been written) we should focus first on our true heritage – freedom and liberty — for all.

The blight of American slavery was a disease largely inherited as a result of original English controlled colonial rule (1607 – 1776), wherein the Crown made it very difficult, if not impossible, for colonists to find good workers. The Crown essentially motivated colonial businesses and plantation owners (through intervention and tyrannical laws restricting use of labor/indentured servants [also not a honorable, or even Biblical policy, in my view]) to utilize slave labor from Africa. It encouraged treating human beings as less than human. This is not a Christian principle. It was a principle born in tyranny. I am not excusing this practice in America after our Independence and founding in 1776, rather, focusing on the fact that it was not inherently an “American” (post Independence) principle (thus used to break down our founding American principles).

After our Independence, sadly, American’s rationalized this policy as it was embedded in their livelihoods and way of life for so long. Laws were sustained or created that supported slavery. There is no excuse for evil. This is truly a scar of American history and founding of which I am ashamed, regardless the rationale for business or survival at the time. However, it took a long time for American’s to courageously move to the principles of it’s own founding – liberty and freedom for ALL.

I agree that the Democratic and “Liberal” platform has institutionalized a virtual slavery to entitlements. For many reasons – personal – this breaks my heart. It IS the big LIE of the liberal Democratic platform.

In general, I also would like to add, we need to be careful with alignment with any party, person, or thing – over time:

—> We need to understand principles, values, and practices — before party.

If we do this then we are able – through the filter of founding principles – to determine both on an issue-by-issue basis, and with regards to overall party, affiliation choices — with whom we should align, and for whom we should vote.

Over time, general political policy and issues-based platforms of each party shift. Just as we have seen many of the “Republican” platforms shift via President Bush to more “Statist” orientation (larger government, more government intervention, crony capitalism, etc., and pro-Amnesty, pro-bailout, pro-NAU, pro-Patriot Act — loss of freedom and liberty via loss of habeas corpus, rights to due process).

Therefore, my hope is that your “party” of choice, becomes the “American” party. “We the People” under the Constitution, Bill of Rights and our founding principles and values. Then, we can together work to ensure our elected representatives hold to the fire of these principles, over time, regardless the title of the party with which they affiliate.

I agree that, today, the Republican party — on average — most closely represents the principles and values of our founding. Yet, there are many in the Republican party who only partly support these principles and support policy and platform that is anti-LIberty and Freedom – a Statist platform. I’ve mentioned a few above.

I firmly believe we need to focus on our founding principles. They will keep ALL American’s free. God bless you. God bless America.

  44. Jenny Burnham says:

If you think you are joining the Republican party of the Civil Rights era, you are sadly mistaken. During the Reagan era, the party began an almost 180 degree turn around which has resulted in a party that now approves of the removal of American rights and liberties and approves of the use of physical abuse/torture on prisoners. They want to allow corporations and the wealthy to run free and have created a war on the Middle Class in the U.S. and class slavery in other nations by driving down the wages and trashing local economies. They want to remove social programs that would keep my 70 year old windowed mother from living on the street. Honestly, if you actually picked up a newspaper (rather than listening to a “friend” and Fox pundits) and compared the current Republican Party polices to the teaching of Christ, you would run as far away form the GOP as you can.

  45. Quonzeles Byrd says:

Responce to the artical on political parties (Walking off the Democat Plantation)
.by Quonzeles Byrd on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 4:08pm.My sister it is good that you have made yourself aware of the political issues that affect us all. However when it comes to political parties, no believer should consider a party but the issues that affects us all. , The pendulum within each party will swing …both ways over time. History has proven that. However the word of God does not change. We have to also remember that this is not a Christian nation. It is a nation that Christians live in, along with Muslims, Jehovah Witnesses, Mormons, Catholics, Gnostics, and Atheists. God has given us the freedom to choose. God has shown us through the law that he gave Moses that morality cannot be legislated. We have campaigning for the office of president a Mormon, Mitt Romney. However God’s word says that a little leaven, leavens the whole loaf. Are you saying that Mitt Romney is enough leaven to cancel out the Word of God? Remember that morality cannot be legislated. I am pro-life, with that said I also believe that I cannot tell a women what to do with her body. All the wrong that anyone chooses to do, they themselves will answer God. You or no one else will stand before God in their place. We need to show everyone the love of Jesus who can intercede on their behalf. People need to be persuaded, we can’t condemn anyone, God’s will judge, however we need to present God’s grace while their is time, not by forcing someone to comply with our beliefs. It was God’s grace that saved me. “It is by grace that we are saved not by works, less we bost.” I don’t vote Republican or Demarcate; neither party can fulfill my needs. I vote my convictions, and voice my concerns about the issues, and there are more issues than just abortions and gay marriages, I am not trying to minimize those issues, the question is how do we affect change in the heart of people. How do we turn people to God? How do we get people to see God in us? Let’s start by not dividing ourselfs according to parties. If you are a Demcrate more power to you, if Republican more power to you too. but God is all power. It is not the government that is splitting families up. It is the chooses that people make, to manipulate that which was established to help single mothers, which is a good thing, to give resources to the poor, needy, elderly and sick, which is true religion.I will not allow any party to stake their claim to my race nor prostitute my faith. Each party has their issues. The Demarcates desire to establish social programs for those in needs, however there have been those who have profited from those programs within the Democratic Party. There are Republicans who preached family values while having mistress on the side, living double lives and yes also profiting from lobbyist that have only one thing in mind money. So my sister I would encourage you to stick to your faith and encourage others to do the same.
